CSS Web Templates
I use a free CMS (Content Management System,) Joomla, to build my websites. One of the things I love the most about Joomla is the extraordinary amount of free web site templates. The designs are breath taking, innovative, unique and easily modified, if you know a little bit of HTML or CSS. Recently, however, website template designs have moved toward pure CSS driven templates, with no tables. The good news is, they look great in the latest browsers, load relatively quickly and will enhance your web site design. You have an out of the box professional looking solution for your ecommerce site. The bad news is, they look horrible in the AOL browser. Why should this matter? AOL has a customer base of at least 29 million people. Many of them never leave the AOL program to browse. I've heard computer literate people say, "get a real web browser," not because they're trying to insult the AOL user, but because they're tired of the limitations AOL imposes. However, if you run an e commerce site, can you afford to write off 29 million potential customers? The answer to that should be a resounding NO! I had an opportunity to check all of my sites in the AOL native browser. Pure CSS templates simply did not make the grade. Spacing was all over the place, modules were collapsed or not showing up at all. Footers were in header positions. Java and flash were disabled, etc. I lost two full production days to choosing and modifying bad but beautiful templates. My advice to any webmaster, make sure you check your sites in as many browsers as you possible can, and don't forget to check the AOL browser. |
