Joomla! Content Management System (CMS)

What is a content management system or CMS? Well, with a regular html website, you have to add program after program, if you want to create a membership area, a shopping cart or an art gallery. There is no guarantee these products will work together or even if they will work with your website. And, each product has a separate control panel, making administration of your website difficult.

A CMS should have all these features integrated into the program, or offered as what is known as an extension, plug-in, module, component or widget. (Most of these terms are interchangeable.)

Our CMS of choice is Joomla. It’s a free product and it's not recommended that you use it without testing it thoroughly, and getting to know its capabilities. However the new version, 1.5 is extremely user friendly. It's the easiest way to build a website, without actually learning how to build a website.

You can’t beat the variety of mature add-ons for Joomla, or the support of the Joomla user/developer community. Everything from foreign language translations handling, flash galleries, shopping carts, memberships areas, downloads of digital goods, articles, Adsense placement, statistics, directories, newsletters and forums, can all be handled in one administrative area.

The basic Joomla program features blogs, polls, caching for faster page load times, RSS feeds as well as a membership area. A Joomla website can handle thousands of users or be used for a simple personal blog.

The developers of Joomla have worked extensively with the developers of Joomla add-ons, to make sure they integrate well with Joomla. Add-ons or extensions as they are known by Joomla users, in "beta," or development, are tested by the Joomla community at large. The review and comment section for extensions serve as references or warnings to other Joomla users, as to whether new products are viable.

And, if a user with programming skills notices a problem with an extension, more than likely they will post the solution to the problem in their comment with the actual code that needed to be corrected. People who work with Joomla donate time and effort to make sure promising new extensions work.

Many extension developers have their own forums, where bugs and fixes can be worked out on an almost daily basis. It is common for a user, when having a problem with a free component, to ask the developer for a fix, and actually get an answer within 15 minutes to 3 hours. Many of the bug fixes come from other users. They all try to help each other.

It is also not uncommon for an extension developer to actually access a users website to pin point a problem. Many times the problem has nothing to do with the extension itself.

Most of the extensions are free. Even paid extensions usually have a free version.

Some extensions are so popular and useful, that the Joomla community actually builds add-ons for extensions, to broaden their usefulness. There are 379 extension specific plug-ins, at this date.

Joomla supports some of the widest variety of templates you'll find on the web. You will very rarely have a problem finding a theme for any website you build. Most of the time, any artwork you have to create is for content, not for template itself.

Once you are a competent Joomla user, it will take less than an hour to get a website up and running.

Joomla! is the English spelling of the Swahili word jumla meaning "all together" or "as a whole." As of April 18, 2008 there are nearly 3,000 extensions available for Joomla!
