Let's Con America - Drill, Baby, Drill
The present oil crisis is a giant con game being worked on the American public. We have the oil and the refineries. Yet, our energy prices have doubled or tripled and the cry from our politicians has become - Drill! Patents for alternative fuel sources and cars that are fuel-efficient have been bought by the oil industry and buried. While sugar cane is the most efficient source of ethanol, we use corn and allow sugar cane fields in Florida to be closed and reclaimed as swampland, in the name of environmentalism. This is while we are calling for oil drilling in the public park lands of the Alaskan wilderness. Ideas to add windmills to the top of skyscrapers in New York have been scraped as being "esthetically" displeasing. We want to drill in the Gulf, where oil production and refining are stopped annually by hurricanes and tropical storms. We also keep strategic oil reserves in the Gulf, again, to be threatened by the weather. Every September, we hold our breath and pray that Mother Nature won't take a key part of American oil production off line. Why? Energy independence is something, in my memory, that we have been kicking around ever since the 1979 oil crisis. As long as the current government has family and friends in the oil business, getting rich off the oil industry, nothing will be accomplished. According to the news, worldwide demand for oil is dropping, and therefore the price is dropping. (Basically because the American consumer can no longer afford to spend money on non-essentials, so the rest of the world has to lower production.) According to what I've seen over the past 30 years, every time we have an election, oil prices drop. This time, however, everyone at the top has been so greedy and oil prices have increased so much, that the price drop will not fall low enough to satisfy the American public. American politico families and their cronies do not solely own many major oil companies. Price manipulation, which is usually handled a little bit better, was taken out of their hands and brutally affected the economy. Where is the development of wind power? Solar power? Energy advances are in the hands of private developers, like T. Boone Pickens. While, I greatly admire Mr. Pickens, why hasn't the government picked up the development of effective alternative energy sources? Wait, I forgot. They have their family and friends policy. Obviously, most of the American public doesn't fall under either of these categories. |

Hey Ms. Marsha, howdy do! Excellent observations -- all absolutely true! When, at the age of 15, in my 10th grade biology class, the instructor elaborated that there were tires that would last for decades but made unavailable to the public by the auto/rubber/gas cartels, I THOUGHT we were in trouble as a society. Sadly, 40 years later, it is the public that is in trouble -- the cartels are alive and well. . . Can everybody say "Con"-Edison????

Suppression of technology by the oil and automotive industries is a fact of life for the US. The more I hear from T. Boone Pickens, the more I have to wonder why we don't use our natural wind corridors and our huge supplies of natural gas, which together could replace 50% of our outsourced oil. And supply new technology jobs for the country. For all of you outside the North East, Con-Edison is the gas and electric company for New York City.
You got it right! They are planning on going to war to get more oil. They will not start getting alternative till they can figure out how to get money out of it. I am sure they want to own that too! along with the mgt, ins companies. That way they have more control over us. People think that there is no such thing as the World Order!

What I don't understand is if we're moving towards socialism, i.e. bailing out Wall Street with tax dollars, why don't we socialize something that will bring us a profit - a wind power and natural gas company.
They have the resourses now to do something about alternative energy. They could offer everyone of us assistance in getting solar from small companies without any problem. There is nothing wrong with ethanol and is to make.

Thanks, Whitney Studios...solar energy should be a part of our energy policy. My only problem with ethanol is that the most efficient source of ethanol is sugar cane and we're using corn. First we subsidized corn farmers to not grow corn and now we're subsidizing corn grown for ethanol. I think 7-15% of our production is going to ethanol, it's driving up feed prices for cattle, and affects the cost of food. It's stupid. Alot of these farms would turn a profit with wind turbines on them and you could stil grow crops.
It's all part of the government rying to keep the people down. I hate to keep on saying this but America has got to wake up! We are under an agenda and unfortunately the agenda is winning. Obama and McCain are not going to do anything for us or our way of life. We need a future in self sustainablity not socialism or war for more oil. Vote Nader!

I can't in good conscience vote Nader. He took Republican funds to finance his 2000 campaign and cost Gore a win in Florida. You can only make changes from positions of power. Nader's power is consumerism, which he has not been able to translate into political strength. If Nader had chosen to play to his strengths and try for Energy Policy changes based on consumer protection, he could have made a change for the better. Instead, we get a Democratic Pat Buchanan - I'll agree to a certain point and then they just get so whacky and out of touch with mainstream voters, they lose credibility except with extremists.
Hi Marsha and Whitney! This is a stirring discussion -- although too accurate regarding the state of mis-management the current society is experiencing. There IS an agenda, sadly people have been mesmerized to complacency via technology, excess and mis-education. Few people realize that 'public servants' [presidents on down] are puppets for the agenda makers. I utterly appreciate the clarity and integrity that you both bring to the table! Hopefully more people WILL hear the 'wake up' call. . . time will tell. . .

Hi Yeishere - I was brought up to question authority. Depending on what's going on in the world, I'm either paranoid revolutionary, or a voice of reason. LOL
