Non-Surgical Face Lifts - Cosmetic Botox Injections

By Marsha Gellerman

You've listened to people talking about non-surgical face lifts and Botox injections for years, and since you never thought you’d need it, you pretty much ignored whatever was being said. Now, aging has caught up to you and you have a new curiosity about Botox. This time you want to know, exactly what Botox does, and how precisely does it work? And, will it help you regenerate elasticity to your sagging skin and lessen laugh lines and wrinkles around your mouth.

Like most non-surgical face lift "cosmeceuticals" discoveries, Botox was actually made to control more dangerous medical conditions.

Botulinum toxins were primary researched in the 1960's to treat neurological condition. In 1989 the FDA authorized Botox to treat eye muscle ailment like blepharospasm, compulsive blinking, compulsive facial twitching, strabismus and crossed eyes. In 2000 it was sanctioned to treat cervical dystonia also know as spasmodic torticollis. This is a condition that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions. In their experiments on using Botox for eye disorders, two Canadian plastic surgeons saw that Botox reduced frown lines between the eyebrows. Even though they were investigating eye conditions, because they were plastic surgeons, they understood the cosmetic implications of their findings. This was a treatment that would set the standard for non-surgical face lifts. The FDA approved Botox for wrinkles treatment on April 15, 2002. Botox is exceptional for the reason that it is one of the few wrinkle remedies to have FDA approval and to have gone through not one or two, but many clinical trials. It is the only non-surgical face lift method that can claim this.

What precisely does Botox do?
When Botox is injected into the muscles of the face, it blocks nerve impulses, which results in the paralysis of the muscles that let you smile, frown and otherwise express emotions with your face. With ample injections, over a period of several months, wrinkles commence to become softer and in lots of cases, lines disappear totally. Botox can be injected into the muscles of the face that cause crows feet, forehead frown lines and laugh lines.

What is Botox?
Botox injections are in reality a diluted type of botulism. This is the same botulism that can make us extremely ill, if it is ingested. Botox cosmetic is a purified, much weaker kind of the Botulinum toxin.

How does Botox work?
Well, to put it simply, whenever you laugh, smile, frown, or for that matter do almost anything with your facial muscles, wrinkles are caused by the underlying contractions of these muscles. After a long time of making these expressions, the depletion of elastin and collagen in your skin causes skin to sag. Wrinkles begin to be very noticeable and the lines begin to become permanent. When lines and wrinkles start to become permanent, no variety of type of wrinkle cream can dispose of them. That's why Botox is an important treatment in the fight against wrinkles. After being injected into the effected area, it paralyzes these muscles for months at a time, so that you can't make these expressions. That's why people who have had Botox injections seem to be so expressionless. You'd still have ample facial movement to perform actions like eating and blinking, but not ample movement to cause additional wrinkles. Hollywood directors despise Botox because lots of actors can no longer express emotions on screen. Still, the bottom line is that Botox injections make you appear younger.

How much does Botox cost?
Botox injections are not cheap. The usual cost of one Botox treatment in the United States is about $250. This also depends on what part of your face is getting the injections. The area near the eyes is more expensive, costing between $300 and $500 per treatment. For larger surface areas such as the forehead, one treatment consisting of multiple injections can cost between $500 and $800 a pop.

What are the side effects of Botox?
Given that Botox went through years of clinical trials, its side effects are very well documented.

Mild side effects are:

Droopy eyelids
Nausea
Headache
Swelling

Dangerous sides effects, indicative of an hypersensitivity are:

Complication swallowing or breathing
Hives
Rash
Itching

Let your medical provider know right away if you have a reaction to Botox.

Warning
Most non-surgical face lift procedures, including Botox injections, should only be performed by a licensed medical practioner.
