Web Site

By Marsha Gellerman

Before you begin to build a web site, it should automatically have seven pages of content ready to place. Six of these pages are what I call the site information pages; About Us, Contact Us, Copyright, Disclaimer, Terms and Conditions and most importantly, if you use Adsense or have ads running on your site, a Privacy Policy page.

The seventh page is the first article you plan on posting on your homepage.

The site information pages can be considered forms, which are cookie cutter, that is, the only thing that changes is the name of the web site. (The exception is the About Us page.)

KISS or keep it simple stupid, is definitely the way to go if you plan on building more than one site, or sites that cover more than one niche.

At one point, I used to customize the Disclaimer and that can be dangerous, because I liked to add one line warning about dangers specific to that niche. While in each case the disclaimer can state that the specific product you are promoting carries inherent dangers …

Pest Control methods present inherent dangers
Weight Loss methods present inherent dangers
Penis Enhancement methods present inherent dangers

If you are building many web sites, leave the "inherent dangers" out. At one point you will forget to modify your disclaimer and the most embarrassing warning statement will be carried over onto all of your sites. I speak from experience.

Since the About Us page is where you sell yourself to your intended audience, it should have an individual feel to it, which connects with your projected visitors. None of the other site information pages have to be written from scratch and depending on the placement of the site's name in the document, each of these pages is unique to Google.

Not unique enough, however, to let you build a site with only these pages, Google will not place you high up in the SERPS (search engine results pages,) unless your niche is woefully underserved.

If you own a site or blog and review products, there are several new rules and regulations in place about letting your visitors know that if they buy a product based on your reviews, you will make money on any sale that originated as a click through on your site. And, if you are receiving free products, you should also let your readers know in the Disclaimer.

Note: No one reads the Disclaimer past the first paragraph, however the Privacy Policy is one of the most read pages on some of my sites.

After placing five more pages of "real" content on the site, all of which should have your keywords in the title, you want to be found by Google. You don't have to wait to have five pages of content, as long as you have unique content on your homepage and post content every day or every other day.

Getting Indexed by Google

This is simple. You can ping the site. You can write a Hub Pages or Squidoo article with links to your site or you can submit your home page to Digg.

Unless you are pursuing a highly competitive term, such as weight loss, acne or mesothelioma, doing any of these actions should result in your site being indexed by Google in 24 hours.

Do not Digg the site information pages.

If you follow this simple basic, you should have a twelve-page site, indexed in Google. I find that it's easier to build out a web site, when the site starts off by having seven pages. Putting up another five or six pages becomes a lot easier.

After you get your base content in place, start your link building efforts. Remember to update the site at least once a month. Try to update it once a week.

Building a web site can be fun, frustrating and profitable, there are just a few basic things that will help you along.

Thank you for sharing these important steps, Marsha. I know that I for one, tend to stray away from the "KISS" principle.
Best wishes.

Thank you, Frederick. I tend to get bogged down in things that should take no longer than a minute or two. Having strict procedures in place helps. I should note however, since our parent site is private and has no advertising, we have an About Us...that's it. LOL.

I'll put up the pages some time this week.

Enjoy your Easter,
Marsha

Thanks for sharing this, this really is something i did know but has re-opened my eyes after closing them slightly for a long time with my efforts of making extra money with websites (donations welcome to my paypal fund - only joking! or not!). thanks again.

I'm now going back over our sites to make sure they comply with this. I found one, with one article and no site information pages. The server must have been rebooted that day and restored to an older back-up.

Tell me, do you do affiliate or adsense sites?

Nevermind, I checked out your Hydroponics site. Very slick.

Thanks Marsha. Good advice for people starting out. And good reminders to the rest of us regarding the basics.

James,
Thank you for your kind remarks. We're all newbies in one phase of web building or another. And to be honest with you, it's good to get these in print as a reminder to myself. LOL

My website used to have the following disclaimer:

Disclaimer: Someone recently said my website has more links than a Jimmy Dean Sausage plant. The webmaster of this website has no control over how many links are in a Jimmy Dean Sausage plant and makes no representation to have any such control. This website is best viewed in the smallest text size.

Of course, having over 4000 pages to my website probably isn't exactly keeping it simple. LOL

You know how I know that I've been in the business too long?

I immediately thought - I wonder how many of those pages are indexed?

I think a good percentage of them have been indexed. The ones that aren't indexed don't hurt me.
